Smith's intellectual curiosity is especially piqued by architectural models made by hand, mostly from cardboard, wood, polystyrene or foam. He wrote a book on the subject, Architectural Model as Machine, in which he analyzes some of the most spectacular examples of all time, including Tatlin's monument to the Third International, Michelangelo's Dome of St. Peter's, and Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye.
Hand-building models is an inspiring experience, says Smith, one that can give architects a crucial perspective on a project. However, in practice, he sees the value of all models—physical, sketch and digital.
