Dr. Becky Choma is a social psychologist in the psychology department at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Her research spans social, political, justice and personality psychology. Generally, she is interested in the psychology of tolerance and intolerance. Dr. Choma explores sociopolitical beliefs linked with tolerance/intolerance, including prejudicial attitudes and ideologies like right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation and right- (vs. left) wing ideology.
Dr. Choma held a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Research Grant (2015-2020). In this research, she explored the relation between ideological beliefs and the degree to which people perceive various hazards and situations as threatening or risky. She also holds a Ministry of Research and Innovation Early Researcher Award grant (2016-2021). In this research, Dr. Choma investigated the role of fear in Islamophobia and whether specific types of humour might attenuate the effects of fear on prejudice toward Muslims
