Dr. Smith is the Undergraduate Program Director for the Department of English. His academic research examines the ways poetry and performance influence values and beliefs in public culture.
In tandem with this scholarship, Smith’s poetry and essays have appeared in many journals and magazines, including Best American Poetry and The Walrus. He is also the author of several books of poetry, such as American Rambler (2000), Slow Poetry in America (2014), and Sons (2017).
In addition to his research, Smith often teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in creative writing, poetry and poetics, rhetorical theory, and literary non-fiction.
