Bio/Research
Dr. Jenny Carson is a historian of twentieth-century American women’s labour history with a focus on the history of service work and women’s organizing in the United States. Her work has appeared in Labor: Studies in Working Class History of the Americas, Just Labour: A Canadian Journal of Work and Society and Labor Studies Journal. Her book, A Matter of Moral Justice: Black Women Laundry Workers and the Fight for Justice (University of Illinois Press, 2021), examines African American and radical women’s organizing in the laundry industry in the twentieth century. Interested in current and historical worker mobilizations, Prof. Carson participated in the five-year SSHRC-funded Poverty and Employment Precarity in Southern Ontario project, which investigated how low-wage workers and their allies have responded collectively to the growth of precarious employment in the 21st century.
