Bio/Research

Julien Meyer is Assistant Professor at the School of Health Services Management within the Ted Rogers School of Management since 2015. He does research on the use of information systems (IS) in healthcare. His two main focuses are the use of IS in laboratories and pathology and 2) the use of IS to improve access to care. This translates into a research program that aims to answer the following questions:

How information systems transform intra- and inter-organizational healthcare processes and practices. Notably, he is currently investigating the transformations in accountability associated with the introduction of information systems in pathology.
How to implement artificial intelligence to support decision processes in pathology. He is currently investigating the influence of AI recommendations on decision-making and the organizational challenges such as the transformations in accountability and in professional autonomy necessary to AI adoption.
How telemedicine can be used to improve access to pathology, both in isolated regions with limited healthcare resources and to highly specialized and rare expertise.
How direct access to care through mhealth (mobile health) applications impacts users and what their perspective on this new mode of care delivery is. He looks into adoption of mhealth apps and into the sentiments generated by mhealth.
How to use algorithms to optimize limited resources use to improve access to care and patient satisfaction.
Julien Meyer leverages his 10+ years of industry experience implementing information systems in diverse industries over multiple continents to orient his research towards applied knowledge and translating theories into useful and useable insights for practitioners and researchers alike. His experience helps him contextualize academic research and software developers’ claim as to their products’ potential to the objectives, processes and constraints specific to each organization.

These abilities help him with qualitative research and he has extensive experience conducting semi-structured interviews leading to a dynamic and rich understanding of respondents’ experience. He also has strong training and abilities in quantitative research, including big data analysis and conducting and analyzing surveys.

His research interests translate into his teaching, where he teaches his students to leverage information and information systems to achieve practical and meaningful changes in their organizations, both as course assignments and as capstone practicum projects.

Julien Meyer earned his Ph.D. at HEC Montreal and his Master of Science in Management at HEC in Paris. Prior to his university career, Julien Meyer worked in Paris for IBM and for Telus Health Solutions in Project Management and Business Analysis, implementing information systems for large organizations.
