Bio/Research

Kelly McShane, PhD, CPsych, received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Concordia University in 2007 and completed her post-doctoral training at the Centre for Research in Inner City Health at St. Michael’s Hospital. She joined the Ted Rogers School of Management in 2018, following 10 years in the Department of Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University. She is a licensed organizational and clinical psychologist (College of Psychologists of Ontario). She is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. She is an avid learner and has pursued additional training in Mediation, Labour Relations, Just Culture, Promoting Professionalism (Vanderbilt), and Change Management, and she earned her Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.

Kelly has worked with various community health organizations and hospitals and undertakes research and evaluation work focused on evidence-based service implementation and client outcomes. Kelly employs a community-engaged approach to projects and relies heavily on qualitative techniques to identify barriers to change and implementation, and quantitative measures to assess program and service impact. Her initial research program focused on evaluating treatment effectiveness for clients attending programming through health and social service agencies. She is a leader in the field of theory-based evaluation for health interventions and has undertaken several realist reviews of health services and programs in the areas of mental health and addictions. She continues this work closely with Progress Place and the Writers Collective of Canada. Her most recent work has focused on interdisciplinary and participatory approaches to policy development and program implementation internationally with communities in Brazil and Nigeria.

Her other line of research focuses on organizational development, occupational health and wellness, and change. In collaboration with community organizations, she develops and tests theories of program change and implementation, with a particular focus on health and wellbeing programs. She is currently evaluating the implementation of the Supporting Frontline Health-Care Workers program, being led by the Canadian Mental Health Association (Ontario Branch). In addition, she investigates organizational structures and processes which impact psychosocial risks in academic workplaces, including harassment and incivility.

She is a member of the International Network for the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ) and an Affiliate Researcher of the Centre for Labour Management Relations. She also consults for The Haven, which provides mental health support for first responders.

Finally, she is deeply committed to community service and is a Board Director for Tri-County Mennonite Homes.

She is also committed to effective, outcome-driven experiential learning for students. She has undertaken several research and consulting roles to assess and provide recommendations on how best to support experiential learning in curricular contexts. She teaches various organizational behaviour courses across the undergraduate and graduate programs (MHACC & MBA), including teams, change management, management, and learning and development.
