Dr. McCarthy's research involvement consists of aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicology, Great Lakes watershed pollution and remediation, and the impact of land-applied pulp mill and municipal biosolids on a suite of aquatic and terrestrial organisms.
In addition, her research has received over 1.7 million dollars in funding in the past 10 years that has been provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (OMOECC), Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), and the NCE's Canadian Water Network (CWN). As well, she has supervised and co-supervised 45 research personnel, including volunteers, undergraduate and graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows.
