Rick Grunberg has been searching for a contented life mix of technology, artistry and education. For the past twenty-five years, he has amassed a wealth of knowledge through his studies in Engineering, BA in Radio and Television Arts, MA in Communication Culture, and his forays into still photography (two years as former Prime Minister Trudeau’s Liberal Party photographer), and as a Director of Photography and Technical Producer in the television industry. Rick was instrumental in founding one of Canada’s most successful television facilities and production companies, where his role as Vice President also allowed him to expand his creative production ambitions. He was later hired as a Technical Director and D.O.P. (Director of Photography) at TVOntario, working on such shows as Polka Dot Door and Polka Dot Shorts, Join In, and shows in the freelance market, such as Shining Time Station, Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, and many more. He has given numerous lectures on advanced camera and lighting techniques throughout North America., and was instrumental in the funding, design and construction of Canada’s first University-based High Definition television training facility. He was also involved in some of the first high-definition tests and shoots almost 25 years ago. Rick has been lecturing at Toronto Met since 1996 on a part-time basis and as full-time faculty since 2001 while always maintaining a busy freelance shooting schedule. Rick’s research interests are now directed in the areas of HD bidirectional broadcast over IP and Digital Cinema, with a key role in the design and implementation of Toronto Met’s Advanced Visualization and Digital Cinema Research Center through the recently awarded million-dollar CFI grant.
