Xijia Gu received a B.Sc. degree from Nankai University, Tianjin, China, in physics in 1982, an M.Sc. degree from University of Toronto, Canada, in 1984, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 1987. He worked as a Research Fellow at Max-Planck-Institut fuer Stromungsforschung, Goettingen, Germany, and University of Toronto between 1987 and 1990. Then, he joined Photonics Research Ontario for six years as a Staff Scientist and three years as a Manager and worked on many research projects related to lasers and laser applications. In 1999, he joined JDS Uniphase as a Senior Manager and developed many fibre optic products for telecommunication, such as fibre grating filters, DWDM modules, and tunable filters. In 2003, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University as an Associate Professor. He has published 91 referred journal articles, 39 conference papers, and holds four patents.
