Mona Abdel-Fattah is currently a practicing midwife at Community Midwives of Hamilton and in expanded scope at Crown Point Midwives. They strive to provide high-quality evidence-based and client-centered maternity care. Professor Abdel-Fattah has dedicated herself to working with a diverse urban population and increasing access to midwifery and sexual and reproductive health care for socioeconomically disadvantaged people in her community. Her Egyptian background has assisted greatly in providing care to an increasing clientele of newcomers and refugees in Hamilton. Professor Abdel-Fattah further explored the social, cultural and economic factors that contribute to health care equity through international experiences while completing her master’s degree in Global Health. These experiences have enhanced her understanding of the challenges faced by socioeconomically disadvantaged populations and how midwifery care can contribute to reducing some of the barriers faced when seeking care.
Professor Abdel-Fattah has been an instructor course coordinator and course developer at McMaster University for several years including in the undergraduate Midwifery Education Program, Continuing Education for Contraception Care, Parts One, Two and Three courses, and Midwifery Led Sexual and Reproductive Health Care in the Master of Midwifery Program. She has found teaching and course development to be enriching parts of her career and hopes to expand her experience and skill in academia over the coming months and years.
